Drawing, 2014

The Drawing 2014 project was a curatorial endeavour focused on the modern and contemporary drawing in India during the 67 years leading up to the exhibition. We aimed to present a visually compelling and historically significant collection of drawings. Beyond the exhibition itself, the project fostered a pedagogical environment, offering an opportunity to explore and theorize the often under-examined practice of drawing in post-Independence Indian art. Recognizing the ongoing dialogues surrounding “Modern” and “Contemporary” art over the past two decades, this curation sought to establish a platform for historicizing and contextualizing these debates. This was achieved by juxtaposing well-known and less conventional artworks and artists, encouraging new ways of viewing and interpreting their work. Ultimately, Drawing 2014 traced the diverse paths that the art of drawing has taken, while also celebrating seven decades of artistic experimentation at Gallery Espace in New Delhi.
